Severe Weather (March 30 - April 2, 2006)
The weather pattern at 6 pm CST on 03/30/2006...with a storm system ("L") and energy aloft moving well north of Arkansas. Severe weather is in the forecast to close out March and to begin April. On March 30th, a storm system moved through the central Plains and upper Midwest, with a cold front trailing south into Texas. Thunderstorms erupted ahead of the front...with severe storms occurring.

Most of the energy associated with the system went well north of Arkansas. Given this, severe storms were most concentrated from eastern Kansas into Missouri, Iowa and Illinois. Even so, isolated storms in Arkansas become severe. The WSR-88D (Doppler Weather Radar) showed that storms were most numerous north of Arkansas at 11 pm CST on 03/30/2006.

There was not enough energy to sweep the front through the state...with additional storms popping up along the front as it reached central Arkansas during the afternoon of the 31st. Large hail was produced, with penny size hail just northwest of Conway (Faulkner County).

The weather pattern at 6 am CST on 04/01/2006...with a front stalled in or near Arkansas.  The front will remain stalled in or near the region into April 1st, with scattered precipitation staying in the forecast. Warmer than normal temperatures will continue as well (afternoon readings in the 70s to lower 80s with 50s and 60s at night).

The front will head to the north late on the 1st, with a new storm system and cold front arriving from the west on the 2nd/early on the 3rd. Another round of thunderstorms is expected along the front. Once again, severe weather will be possible.
